CARO-KANN DEFENSE

Unlike the French defense, Black’s Queen bishop is not shut in. Black nonetheless may have some problems to solve. One of the major choices for White is the Panov-Botvinnik Attack which uses the sequence 1. e4 c6; 2. d4. d5; 3. ed cd; 4. c4. The standard continuation here is 4. ____ Nf6; 5. Nc3. Another choice for White is 3. Nc3 to which the usual continuation is 3. ___ de; 4. Nxe4.
