CHESS CLOCKS

What is being advertised here are 12 different types of digital chess clocks suitable for use in modern tournaments and 1 that may be ok for school or club use. Although analog chess clocks still exist they are not suitable for use in chess tournaments which have per move delays or increments in the time control. They are also less accurate in determining when the allotted time has expired. In the past there have sometimes been disputes regarding the expiration of time when a flag falls at the end of a time control. Digital clocks help to eliminate such disputes over when the allotted time has expired. At the very bottom of this page are links for analog chess clocks below all the digital chess clocks being listed.

DGT 1001 cannot be recommended for general tournament use. This clock has neither delay nor increment settings capability. There is no facility to set a secondary time control. This particular digital clock is nevertheless shown on this page for the benefit of customers who don’t care about these limitations or don’t need it for modern USCF or FIDE chess tournaments.

It has long been believed that Chronos clocks have the most capability and useful function but you have to pay more to get these capabilities. The Dallas Chess Club provides mainly this type of clock to tournament contestants not using their own. They really are very good clocks with a lot of functionality as to how you can set them. There are now some reviews reported by Amazon where a few customers thought the DGT 2010 DIGITAL CHESS CLOCK was as good as or even better than Chronos. I will leave it up to the interested reader to check this out himself and make the decision he/she believes is correct. The DGT 2010 clock has been declared the official clock of FIDE, The World Chess Federation. Their website is at this link: WORLD CHESS FEDERATION In the case of major FIDE events, the use of chess clocks is often restricted to the ones approved by FIDE such as DGT 2010 and DGT 3000. For lesser FIDE events, there is often less strict enforcement of this rule.

Some companies are now selling a clock they believe is superior to all the others. This clock is called VTEK 300 Ultimate Chess Clock. Customer reviews on this product are far more limited than other clocks which have been around much longer. The price is higher than most other chess clocks.

Also shown on this page are DGT North American chess clock, DGT 3000 chess clock, Excalibur Chess Timer, ZMF II chess clocks and a new type of clock called Omcor Game Timer 960.

A common feature in modern USCF tournaments is Saitek chess clocks. I have a blue one that I take with me to chess tournaments. This looks like a good choice if you want a clock that has just the minimum capabilities needed in modern USCF-rated chess tournaments. Both blue and silver models of this clock exist. The blue clock has a delay capability but no increment capability. It has secondary time control capabilities. One concern I had when I got it was the lack of good instructions explaining how to use it. But I got some help to overcome the problem. The silver model has increment as well as delay capabilities and the secondary time control capabilities. For some reason there are serious supply problems now with both the blue and silver models of this clock. This clock is manufactured by the same company that makes Mephisto chess computers where there is also a serious supply problem. It appears that the company that makes these products discontinued the manufacture either temporarily or permanently as the case may be. If you are able to get one you might have to pay an inflated price for it. But many chess supply companies have none in stock at all. I chose to omit it from the list of advertised chess clocks because there are too many supply problems.

PRODUCT SUMMARIES ON DGT CHESS CLOCKS

The DGT North American Clock is the first I will discuss. (Top Left Above) This clock has not been accepted for use in major FIDE tournaments. May be ok for use in USCF tournaments that are not FIDE rated. (In some FIDE tournaments that are not major events there is less enforcement of the rule that only FIDE approved clocks be used.) This clock carries a 2 year manufacturer warranty.

The DGT 2010 Digital Chess Clock has been declared the official clock of FIDE, the World Chess Federation. (Middle Top Above) There are some users who think this clock is better than Chronos clocks. I will leave it to the reader to agree or disagree. This clock carries a 1 year manufacturer warranty.

The DGT 3000 Digital Chess Clock is one of the better chess clocks. (Top Right Above) This clock has been accepted for use in FIDE-rated tournaments. This clock carries a 5 year manufacturer warranty which is longer than most other chess clocks. This clock has capabilities very similar to what you have with Chronos clocks.

Other types of DGT chess clocks are available but I believe that these 3 are the ones of greatest importance for use in USCF tournaments.

The bottom item shown is a DGT 1001 chess clock. As stated before the DGT 1001 chess clock cannot be used in chess tournaments that have delays or increment in the time control. Neither can they be used for tournaments that have a secondary time control. They may be ok for other purposes. This clock carries a 2 year manufacturer warranty.

EXCALIBUR CHESS CLOCK

**************************************************************************************************************************

Excalibur Game Time II Chess Timer XC5553BK93ABL chess clock was endorsed by the United States Chess Federation (USCF). Most customers thought they got a good or excellent deal and they thought the clock was easy to use. But there were also a few complaints that said the buttons were flimsy. In addition I saw a few complaints that said the clock worked fine when they first got it but malfunctioned months or a few years later. If this is the clock you want and you can get it now, it might be best not to delay as supplies are limited.
