OTHER d PAWN DEFENSES

On this page defenses such as the Queen’s Indian, Dutch, Benoni, and Budapest are dealt with. The Benko Gambit is a very important branch of the Benoni Defense. This gambit is often reached via the sequence: 1. d4 Nf6; 2. c4 c5; 3. d5 b5. On 4. cb Black often plays a6.

The Queen’s Indian defense is reached via the sequence: 1. d4 Nf6; 2. c4 e6; 3. Nf3 b6. The Budpaest Defense or Budapest Gambit is reached via the sequence 1. d4 Nf6; 2. c4 e5. After 3. de5 Black can play to recover the sacrificed pawn by means of Ng4 or he can play for an attack by means of Ne4. The Dutch Defense begins with 1. d4 f5. Major choices for Black include the classical Dutch, the Stonewall Variation, and the Leningrad System. The Leningrad System resembles the King’s Indian Defense. The major difference is that Black plays f5 much earlier and doesn’t have to move his King Knight a second time to get this move in. Black intends to counter later with d6 and e5 with a pawn structure like the King’s Indian Defense. A King fianchetto has long been a popular way to counter the Dutch. White’s King Bishop is generally more effective at g2 that it is at d3. White’s King Bishop threatens nothing at d3. At g2 it may exert pressure against Black’s center and Queenside. This tends to be true with all of the major Dutch Defense variations.
