OTHER DOUBLE e-pawn

On this page you can get information about the Petroff, the Vienna game, the Giuoco Piano, and the King’s Gambit. As commonly played, the Petroff is really more exchange of center pawns than counterattack. Against the most obvious continuation 3. Nxe5 Nxe4; White wins a pawn with 4. Qe2. Therefore Black usually answers 3. Nxe5 with d6. An alternative for White is 3. d4. Both moves offer reasonable prospects for White of getting slightly more than equality. The Giuoco Piano is also called the Italian Game. Black’s main replies to 3. Bc4 are Bc5 and Nf6. If White wishes to refute Nf6 he must try 4. Ng5 to which Black often replies d5. A pawn sacrifice for superior development has commonly been recommended. Thus 5. ed  Na5; 6. Bb5+ c6; 7. dc bc; 8. Be2. It’s debateable whether Black’s compensation is sufficient for full equality. 5.___Nxd5 is another possibility. The Fried Liver Attack with 6. Nxf7 is a major attempt to refute 5.___Nxd5. However 6. d4 is considered to be a more reliable means of refutation. An alternative for Black is the Wilkes-Barre variation which leads to huge tactical complications. Black answers 4. Ng5 with Bc5 ignoring the threat to f7 and focusing on a counterattack. According to Houdini 3 Extreme White has a huge and likely winning advantage after 5. Nxf7 Bxf2+; 6. Kf1 Qe7; 7. Nxh8 Bb6 etc.
