SICILIAN DRAGON

This remains a common choice in spite of the problems Black is thought to Face in the Yugoslav Attack and the Maroczy bind.

The Accelerated Dragon is also included.

A more or less standard sequence of moves in the Sicilian Dragon with the Yugoslav Attack runs:  1. e4   c5;  2.  Nf3   d6;  3. d4  cd;  4. Nxd4  Nf6;  5. Nc3   g6; 6. Be3  Bg7;  7. f3  O-O; 8. Qd2  Nc6; producing the position shown below on the left.

Yugoslav Attack Maroczy Bind Classical Dragon

The most popular choices from this position are 9. O-O-O  and  9.  Bc4. Both moves create some problems for Black. Against 9. O-O-O Black can try d5, but this doesn’t quite solve all his problems. 10 Kb1  and 10 Qe1  both make it tough for Black to get equality. Other 9th moves for Black may be worse. Against 9 Bc4 the move most often recommended for Black is Bd7. This falls a little short of achieving equality. Nxd4 and Qa5 may be worse.

An option for Black to sidestep the Yugoslav Attack is the Accelerated Dragon. The typical sequence is:  1. e4  c5; 2. Nf3  Nc6; 3. d4  cd; 3. Nxd4 Bg7.  4. c4 is the Maroczy Bind. The merits of the Accelerated Dragon pretty much hinge on the Maroczy Bind. Black has less opportunity for counterplay with Rc8, d5, or b5. This is why Black often has trouble getting equality against the Maroczy Bind.

Another option for White is the classical dragon. The typical sequence is: 1. e4  c5;  2. Nf3  d6;  3. d4  cd;  4. Nxd4  Nf6;  5. Nc3  g6;  6. Be2  Bg7;  7. O-O O-O; 8. Be3 Nc6; 9. Nb3 Be6; 10. f4. The major choices for Black are Na5, Qc8, and Rc8. Qc8 is designed to prevent 11. f5. But it turns out that prevention of 11. f5 is not essential in this position. 10. ____ Rc8; 11. f5 Bd7 is fine for Black. Black now can use the square e5 for his queen knight with excellent counterplay.
